By Pete Schmitz, General Manager
Environmental stewardship continues to be a hot topic of discussion, and for good reason. We can all agree that protecting our land and water is extremely important. Where this goes off the rails at times is when our agricultural producers are accused of a lack of concern for these basic resources. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Here’s a case in point. This fall, virtually all of our customers used a nitrogen stabilizers—N-Serve® with anhydrous and Instinct® with urea—to keep the nitrogen where it belongs. The cost for this practice is about $10.50 per acre, but everyone benefits. The farmer retains more nitrogen to benefit crops in the spring, and that means more nitrogen is kept out of our water systems.
At FCA, we’re proud of the efforts our farmers make to farm responsibly and adopt new practices that improve their ability to protect the environment. After all, farmers drink the same water and eat the same food as everyone else in our country and have a greater interest than most in protecting the resources that provide their livelihood.
From GMOs to nitrogen stewardship, ag tends to get the short end of the stick these days. The truth is, our farmers produce a great crop while also protecting the environment. That’s a side of the story that needs to be told.
As all of us continue to operate in a challenging ag business climate, we’re doing everything we can at FCA to keep costs low and maintain financial strength while serving our patrons. Like you, we’re finding ways to be more efficient. Our new telephone system is a good example. We’ve reduced our incoming lines by 20, calls are routed directly to the departments that receive the highest volume, and we’re saving more than $20,000 a year.
We thank you for your continued support and look forward to working with you in 2018.
